A Note On: Motivation, Passion, and Other Funny Drugs.
Being motivated isn’t about putting the things off you enjoy in order to complete a given task. It’s about making the things you love; the things you do the most. When you base your life and career around something you whole-heartedly believe in; You end up with something you don’t have to focus to do anymore. Motivation shouldn’t be about finding inspiration and putting off “fun stuff” to be productive. It should be about waking up on those rainy days with a horrible cold and knowing the day will be shit… Yet you still smile when you work, you still love doing what you do.
Passion is a word thrown around in the design industry a lot these days. In every auto-biography, on every designer or artist’s about page, you’ll find that word somewhere. Being passionate to me is the same as being motivated. Having a joy and drive to be in a field, because you genuinely enjoy it. Face it, there are some very shitty jobs in the world, most with pay far below what they should have. Yet, you always find people not just doing those jobs, but some even taking them to heart and making what they do their pride in their life. This is how you should feel to be a designer, developer, garbage disposal worker, doctor, fireman, or even a porn-star. Motivation is important, but making sure you’re motivated for the right reasons should always come first. Money and stability is important, but happiness, love, and passion far outweigh being miserable in your career.
