You’re already paid very well, the industry is booming, and you have job opportunities out the wazoo. Stop complaining and demanding respect, more money, and better benefits.

You aren’t a real designer.
Just because you can code, make a Tumblr theme, or even a full blown website… That doesn’t make you a real designer.
You earn the title of being a web designer, or any design title for that matter. After years of experience and learning you still might not be able to call yourself a true designer. Sure, you can make a website that looks just as snazzy and cool as any other… But you aren’t a designer. You earn that title, when you can explain why you design things a certain way. Why is that sidebar on the left side? Why is the font serif, and not sans-serif? Why a content slider there, why put that meta data to the left? Once you can answer those questions in relation to the clients you’re designing for, that’s when you can call yourself a designer.
